Why you need to prepare for retirementBy Randell Tiongson on February 13th, 2023
It is not an issue of if, it is an issue of when.
If you do not put any money away for retirement, don’t expect to have any when you retire. Preparation is key.
It has been said that money cannot buy happiness and I agree, but having money can provide you with choices and options. Having more money just means more choices. If you have planned and prepared properly, you could have many choices during retirement. If you did not plan or have planned poorly, you might not have any choice but to work for the rest of your life or depend on family members for support. Both options are something I will not wish for myself, and should not be yours as well. 2 Corinthians 12:14 says: “Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I seek not what is yours but you. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.” (ESV)
The question of saving for retirement comes down to this: should you save and invest money during your working years to provide for yourself during your retirement years? 2 Thessalonians 3:7–10 says, “For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.” (ESV)
Financial planning and stewardship, including saving for retirement, can enable you to better serve others later. Understand that when you save for your retirement, not for selfish enjoyment of a lavish life after years of hard work, and not even for self-sufficiency since our dependence is always on God, your goal is to exercise godly wisdom in providing for your needs in future years and having enough to continue giving to others.
Your trust should not be in retirement programs or reliance on your investments. Your heart should be set on things above—where your true treasure stands—while still recognizing future needs. Understand that making provisions today for those future needs is a wise thing to do.
Go and start preparing today.

Thank you, Sir Randell, for such an enlightening article. There are always fresh takeaways from you, from every seminar, webinar, training that I have attended, and from every article that I have read. The Biblical quotes that you are sharing have not been introduced to me at all by many experts who wanted to keep me ignorant. Thank you for such enlightenment, Sir Randell. May I be able to use the Bible in empowering myself and others in the same way that you are doing in this article. God bless you always, and may I be able to prepare well for my retirement.
