Financial Education Is One of the Best Gifts We Can Give Our Children

By Randell Tiongson on June 12th, 2026

As parents, the greatest gift we can give our children is the gospel—the truth that they are loved by God, saved through Jesus Christ, and called to live under His good rule. Nothing comes close to that.

Yet next to the gospel, I believe one of the most practical and powerful gifts we can give our children is good financial education. Why? Because money will touch almost every area of their lives. It will affect their decisions, relationships, careers, marriages, generosity, freedom, and even their ability to pursue God’s calling. Whether they earn a little or a lot, they will need to know how to handle money wisely.

Sadly, many parents work hard to give their children a good education, comfortable lives, and material advantages, yet fail to teach them how money actually works. We prepare them to earn but not always to manage. We teach them how to succeed academically but not how to avoid debt, delay gratification, save consistently, invest wisely, and give generously.

Financial education is not merely about raising rich children, it is about raising responsible stewards.

Our children need to understand that money is a resource, not their source. God is our source. Money is simply one of the many things He entrusts to us. They need to learn that income is not the same as wealth, that wants are not needs, and that looking rich is very different from being financially secure. They need to know that debt can become a cruel master, that saving requires discipline, that investing rewards patience, and that generosity keeps money from owning our hearts. Most importantly, they need to understand that everything belongs to God. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” —Psalm 24:1

This is the heart behind my book, BLUE CHIP: A No Nonsense Guide to Raising Financially Smart Kids.

A blue-chip investment is valuable, dependable, and built for the long term. Our children are infinitely more valuable than any stock, business, or property we could ever own. They are our greatest stewardship responsibility and one of our most important long-term investments.

We should not leave their financial formation to social media, advertising, influencers, or painful mistakes. We must teach them intentionally, model wise stewardship consistently, and involve them in age-appropriate conversations about money.

They will learn more from how we live than from what we say. When they see us living within our means, avoiding unnecessary debt, saving faithfully, giving joyfully, and trusting God rather than money, they begin to understand what biblical stewardship looks like.

Good financial education cannot save our children. Only Jesus can do that. Yet it can protect them from many unnecessary wounds, prepare them for adult responsibilities, strengthen their future families, and equip them to use God’s resources for His purposes.

Teach them the gospel. Teach them stewardship. Teach them that money is a good servant but a terrible master.

Let us raise children who are not merely financially successful, but financially wise, generous, responsible, content, and faithful to God.

That is what it means to raise a true blue chip.
