The need to embrace biblical manhood, a personal appeal

To my Brothers,
I hope this post finds you well. Today, I want to dive into a topic that’s been on my heart lately: the need for Filipino men to have a better understanding of biblical manhood. This isn’t just a call to pick up the Bible and read, but a challenge to internalize and live out the principles that define true manhood according to Scripture. Let me share why this is so crucial for us today.
Growing up in the Philippines, I was surrounded by various images of what it meant to be a man. From the macho, stoic figures in local films to the hardworking fathers who silently bore the weight of providing for their families, the concept of manhood seemed multifaceted yet often confusing. As I got older, I realized that many of these images were incomplete, sometimes even damaging.
For a long time, I equated manhood with toughness and the ability to handle anything life threw my way without showing any sign of weakness. Emotions were often seen as a sign of vulnerability, something to be suppressed. However, as I began to explore the teachings of the Bible, I found a different picture of manhood—one that was both challenging and refreshing.
Biblical manhood, as I’ve come to understand it, is rooted in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Here are a few key aspects that have reshaped my understanding:
Servant Leadership: Jesus exemplified servant leadership. He washed the feet of His disciples, showing that true leadership is not about lording over others but serving them. As Filipino men, embracing this concept means leading our families, communities, and workplaces with humility and a heart to serve rather than dominate.
Emotional Honesty: Jesus wept, expressed sorrow, and showed compassion. The Bible doesn’t shy away from displaying the full range of human emotions, demonstrating that it’s okay to feel and express our emotions. For too long, many of us have bottled up our feelings, thinking it’s a sign of strength. In reality, acknowledging and dealing with our emotions can lead to true healing and strength.
Moral Integrity: In a world where shortcuts and unethical behavior are often tempting, the Bible calls us to live with integrity. This means being honest in our dealings, faithful in our relationships, and consistent in our values. It’s about being the same person in private as we are in public.
Protective Responsibility: Ephesians 5:25 calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. This isn’t just about protection in the physical sense but also emotional and spiritual. It’s about creating a safe environment where our loved ones can flourish.
Community and Accountability: The Bible emphasizes the importance of community. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” We need each other to grow, to be challenged, and to stay accountable. It’s vital to surround ourselves with fellow men who are committed to these same biblical principles.
In the modern Filipino context, these principles can help us navigate the complexities of life. Our society often presents conflicting ideals of manhood—ranging from the traditional expectations to modern pressures. Social media has been the go to of many young Filipinos as a model of manhood and yet more often than not, it presents a distorted view of manhood. By anchoring ourselves in biblical truths, we can find a steady and fulfilling path.
So, why is this understanding necessary today? Because our families, our communities, and our nation need men who are both strong and compassionate, both providers and nurturers, and both leaders and also servants. We need men who reflect the character of Christ in every aspect of their lives.
If we embrace this journey, we can break free from the chains of toxic masculinity and cultural misconceptions. We can become better fathers, husbands, friends, and leaders. It’s not an easy path, but it’s a worthwhile one. And it starts with understanding and living out what it truly means to be a man according to the Bible.
Let’s embark on this journey together. Let’s redefine manhood for the better, for the sake of our families, our communities, and ourselves.
Blessings,
Randell
