What Matters Most

Wether we admit it or not, we all dream of accomplishing something meaningful. We want our lives to count, our work to succeed, and our contribution to be remembered. Yet despite our best plans, talents, resources, and effort, so much remains beyond our control. We are, after all, only human.

We cannot control how long our success will last, we cannot guarantee that people will remember our names, we cannot determine how others will respond to what we build and even our greatest achievements can fade with time.

If this life is all there is, then everything eventually comes to nothing. Names are forgotten, institutions disappear, wealth changes hands, and even the best things we accomplish will one day be gone.

But there is God.

If the God of the Bible is real, and He is, then there is a greater reality beyond what our eyes can see. This life is not the whole story, eternity changes the meaning of everything.

Our work is no longer merely about recognition, applause, income, position, or legacy. Every good endeavor done in response to God’s calling can have eternal significance. A simple act of obedience can matter forever. A word of encouragement, an honest day’s work, a generous gift, a person discipled, a family served, or a business led with integrity may look ordinary today, but God can use it for purposes far beyond what we can imagine.

This should change the way we look at life.

We must begin to ask not only, “Will this make me successful?” but also, “Will this please God?” Not only, “Will people remember me?” but, “Will this matter in eternity?” Not only, “What can I gain?” but, “How can I faithfully serve?”

Looking at life through the lens of eternity does not make us less engaged in the present, it makes us more faithful in it. We work hard, love deeply, give generously, and serve wholeheartedly—not because everything depends on us, but because everything belongs to God.

We may not always see the results and we may never receive the recognition. Some of what we do may appear small, unnoticed, or even unsuccessful. But when our labor is offered to the Lord, none of it is wasted.

May I suggest that you start looking at your work, relationships, decisions, opportunities, and resources in light of eternity. Do what God has placed before you with faithfulness. Obey Him even when the results are uncertain. Serve even when no one is watching. Give even when no one applauds.

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” —1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV

Success may fade, and people may forget. But what is done in the Lord will never be in vain.
