God’s purpose for business: A personal reflection
By chan on May 18th, 2024
As a business owner and a follower of Christ, I’ve often found myself reflecting on the true purpose of my work. Why am I doing this? What does God want to achieve through my business and all other pursuits? These questions have led me to search the Scriptures for guidance and wisdom. Today, I want to share with you my journey and insights on understanding God’s ultimate purpose for business.
Glorifying God Through Business
First and foremost, I believe that the ultimate purpose of any business is to glorify God. This belief is rooted in Scripture. In 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV), Paul writes, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” This reminds me that my business activities, like every other aspect of my life, should be conducted in a manner that honors God. It’s not just about making a profit or achieving success by worldly standards, but about reflecting God’s character in the way I conduct my business.
Serving Others with Excellence
Another key aspect of God’s purpose for business is serving others. Jesus taught us the importance of serving in Matthew 20:28 (ESV), where He says, “Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This principle applies to business as well. My endeavors should be a means of serving my customers, stakeholders, employees, and community. By providing valuable goods and services, creating jobs, and fostering a positive workplace culture, I am fulfilling a part of God’s purpose.
Stewardship of Resources
God calls us to be good stewards of the resources He has entrusted to us. In the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30, ESV), Jesus illustrates the importance of using our resources wisely and faithfully. As a business owner, I see this as a call to manage my company’s resources—time, money, talents, and opportunities—with diligence and integrity. This means making decisions that are not only profitable but also ethical and sustainable, reflecting God’s concern for justice and creation care.
Advancing God’s Kingdom
Business can also be a powerful platform for advancing God’s kingdom. This doesn’t necessarily mean overt evangelism, but rather living out my faith in such a way that others are drawn to God. Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV) says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” By demonstrating Christ-like behavior—integrity, kindness, and excellence—in my business dealings, I can be a witness to the transformative power of the Gospel.
Creating Opportunities for Ministry
Moreover, a business can create unique opportunities for ministry. For instance, it can provide a context for mentorship and discipleship, both for staff and clients. It can also generate profits that can be reinvested into advancing God’s kingdom. This aligns with the call in Philippians 2:4 (ESV), “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Through these actions, my business can be a conduit for God’s love and provision in the world.

Understanding God’s ultimate purpose for business has profoundly impacted the way I approach my work. It has shifted my focus from merely seeking personal gain to striving to glorify God, serve others, steward resources wisely, advance His kingdom, and create opportunities for ministry. As I continue to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the business world, I am reminded that my ultimate goal is to align my business practices with God’s eternal purposes. This perspective not only brings deeper meaning to my work but also inspires me to pursue excellence and integrity in all that I do.
Reflecting on these truths, I encourage fellow business owners and leaders to seek God’s guidance and wisdom in their professional endeavors. Let us remember that our work is a significant part of our worship and witness in the world.
A Prayer for Businessmen
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with hearts full of gratitude and humility. We thank You for the opportunities and resources You have entrusted to us in our business endeavors. We acknowledge that every good and perfect gift comes from You, and we seek to honor You in all that we do.
Lord, we pray for wisdom and discernment in our business decisions. Help us to navigate the complexities of the marketplace with integrity and excellence. Guide our steps and grant us the insight to make choices that reflect Your will and Your ways. May our businesses be a testament to Your goodness and faithfulness.
Father, we ask for Your strength and courage to stand firm in our values and principles, even when faced with challenges and temptations. Empower us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You in every aspect of our professional lives. Let our actions and attitudes bring glory to Your name and draw others to Your light.
We lift up our employees, partners, and clients to You, Lord. Bless them and their families with health, peace, and prosperity. May our interactions with them be marked by kindness, respect, and a genuine desire to serve. Help us to create a workplace environment that fosters growth, collaboration, and mutual respect.
Lord, we also pray for our fellow businessmen and women around the world. Strengthen them with Your presence and provide them with the resources they need to succeed. In times of difficulty, remind them of Your promises and give them the endurance to persevere. In times of success, keep them humble and mindful of Your grace.
Lastly, we ask that You use our businesses as platforms for advancing Your kingdom. Show us ways to bless our communities, support charitable causes, and share Your love with those in need. Let our businesses be a reflection of Your character and a beacon of hope in the world.
We commit our work to You, trusting that You will guide us and use our efforts for Your greater purpose. May everything we do be done in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Amen.
